Is Bushido still alive in Japan?
Dear Jounarists fighting for freedom,

A Samurai in Japan will hold a Press Conference at 15:30 PM, Thursday November 09, 2006 (Japan Standard Time), at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (FCCJ).

The FCCJ announced the press conference as follows:

Summary:
Press Conference, Togo Fujita,
CEO, eHomes Inc.

Language:
The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.

Description:
Disgraced architect Hidetsugu Aneha is expected to be sentenced on Thursday for his part in the fabricated earthquake-resistance data scandal. Immediately following the ruling, Togo Fujita, president of now-defunct building inspection agency eHomes Inc., will come to the FCCJ from the court to give his opinion of the verdict, offer his views on the incident and answer questions.

Fujita claims to have first exposed the falsifications and says the incident was due to a flaw in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MILT) system for building certifications. He claims the government is trying to sweep the problem under the carpet by assigning blame to a small number of private individuals. He also claims that previous cases of falsified data were suppressed by the government and never reported to the public. A report to then-Prime Minister Koizumi was ignored and he was blocked by bureaucrats and police from making a report to Prime Minister Abe.

One hundred ago, that is, 1905. Nitobe Inazô published a book entitled “Bushido: The Soul of Japan”.

Bushido: The Soul of Japan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bushido:_The_Soul_of_Japan

He stated in his book as follows:

"An unconscious and irresistible power, Bushido has been moving the nation and individuals. It was an honest confession of the race when Yoshida Shoin, one of the most brilliant pioneers of Modern Japan, wrote on the eve of his execution the following stanza;—

"Full well I knew this course must end in death;
It was Yamato spirit urged me on
To dare whate'er betide."

Unformulated, Bushido was and still is the animating spirit, the motor force of our country.”

A number of people in Japan, off course, Mr. Fujita Togo among them, sympathize with the above statement.

I believe that they in 2006 also agree with Nitobe's conclusion in 1905:

“Bushido as an independent code of ethics may vanish, but its power will not perish from the earth; its schools of martial prowess or civic honor may be demolished, but its light and its glory will long survive their ruins. Like its symbolic flower, after it is blown to the four winds, it will still bless mankind with the perfume with which it will enrich life. Ages after, when its customaries shall have been buried and its very name forgotten, its odors will come floating in the air as from a far-off unseen hill, "the wayside gaze beyond;"—then in the beautiful language of the Quaker poet,

"The traveler owns the grateful sense
Of sweetness near he knows not whence,
And, pausing, takes with forehead bare
The benediction of the air."”

Thursday November 09, 2006 in Japan will be a beautiful day.

Yours sincerely
